Get acquainted with… Antarctica! (1)

Holsteins with 100,000 kg/220,000 lb are emerging more and more often, but: the conditions under which Bra-Ko Antarctica produces are unique. Last week this EX-92 Dorcy daughter (photo) together with her herd mates were active in the midst of outside temperature of -38/-40 degrees Celsius for three consecutive days! And six days of -33/-40 degrees. Despite these temperatures, Antarctica relentlessly continued working on her current lactation of 18,885 kg/41,547 lb. Antarctica (a granddaughter of Milksource Goldwyn Africa) is owned by Isakgården Holsteins in Älvsbyn, Sweden, close to the Arctic Circle.

Elite Highlight Sale

The first elite European sale of 2024 went very well! At the Highlight Sale (Germany), which is organized by RUW, an average of €7720 was reached, with a top price of €55,000 for Pröbstings Showdown, a high-indexing Cronk daughter from the family that also provided bulls like Pröbstings Global and Globus.

Antarctica (2)

What happens on a dairy farm when the temperature falls to -38/-40 degrees? ‘Fortunately our dairy barn is well insulated, so that worked out alright,’ tells Anki Sandin from Isakgården. ‘Our young stock are housed in a colder barn, so the water there kept freezing. But they also did alright; what you do notice is that all animals eat a lot more feed, so it important to ensure that it is provided.’ On average, the 115 Holsteins from Isakgården produce 14,000 kg/30,800 lb 3.8% 3.4%. More about winter at Isakgården in HI 03/2024.

Jersey International

The family of HI publications is expanding further in 2024. You are already familiar with Holstein International, Brown Swiss International, Dairy Breeds International, HI Plus and KuhFacto; starting in April 2024, another will be added, “Jersey International” (JI), which will provide extensive coverage of global Jersey breeding. In five different languages.

Switzerland

The highest indexing female Holstein of Switzerland is Bipper Casalla. The Gordon daughter, who scores 1691 gISET/3030 gTPI, descends via AltaZazzle and Timberlake out of Regan-Danhof Jedi Cashmere (Cosmopolitan family). Casalla and her full sister Casa (1653 gISET) will be sold this week during the EuroTop sale.
